Airline Transport Pilot License

Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence: Qualify as a pilot in 20 to 22 months

The wide world of aviation is open to students of the RWL German Flight Academy. The profession of pilot is respected and coveted. And with a training duration of 20 to 22 months for the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), you can qualify as a pilot in a relatively short time. If you want to become a pilot, you will have many questions at the beginning. What skills do I need to have? How much will it cost? And what funding options are there? We will be happy to answer these and any other questions in detail in advance in a non-binding, individual consultation at the flight school and in an online presentation.

These skills are required for pilot training

Skills and commitment are key factors in this career choice. We establish in advance whether a candidate would be a suitable pilot of a commercial aircraft. As part of a performance review, we require above all a knowledge of mathematics, physics and English. Up to 120 student pilots pass the test each year and start training at the RWL flying school. The test results achieved by the Mönchengladbach student pilots with the supervisory authority are above average.

What training as a pilot is like

Here at our modern training building at MGL airport, we impart theoretical knowledge to our students. Plus there is the practical pilot training in the air. There are 20 single- and twin-engine aircraft at Mönchengladbach. Students are taught to fly a large commercial aircraft in the simulator. RWL operates a Boeing 737 and an Airbus A320 full-flight simulator and two smaller fixed-base simulators at Mönchengladbach. You will find detailed information on the subject of ATPL ab initio here.

ATPL integrated

Do you dream of piloting a commercial aircraft? Do you have little or no flying experience but would still like to acquire a commercial pilot’s licence? Then the continuous ATPL training at RWL is just right for you. Our ATPL ab initio (= from the beginning) training course is ideal for applicants who have never sat in an aircraft cockpit before.

The ATPL ab initio training is geared from the first hour of training to the future professional goal of commercial pilot, and is the only training to be supported by the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAFöG) provided that a candidate meets the personal requirements for state support.

It takes about 20-22 months to train as a commercial pilot.

In the ATPL theory training, you can expect intense daily classroom instruction from 09:00 to 16:00. This will deepen your understanding of aircraft systems, navigation, meteorology, and more. Regular progress tests continuously check your level of knowledge and allow for targeted review. The culmination of the theory phase is a preparatory seminar. Here, all learning content is compactly summarized, last-minute uncertainties are eliminated, and exam tips are provided. This structured training optimally prepares you for the ATPL exam and lays the foundation for a successful career as a pilot.

  • 13 exam-relevant subjects
  • 781 hours of instruction
  • Progress tests in all subjects
  • iPad teaching materials
  • 3-week seminar for revision of all subjects

In the first practical phase of your ATPL training, you will encounter flight training under VFR conditions. The flights mainly focus on the vicinity of the airfield, where you will perform basic flight exercises. Here, you learn the essential skills for safe take-offs, landings, and navigation. Your skills will be intensively trained as you master various flight maneuvers. The highlight of this phase is undoubtedly your first solo flight, an unforgettable experience that strengthens your abilities and confidence.

  • 10 hours of flight training
  • Basic flight exercises
  • First solo flight

In the second practical phase of your ATPL training, you face exciting challenges. You will complete 20 hours of flight training under VFR conditions, focusing on practicing traffic pattern. Here, you refine your skills in precise take-offs and landings. The so-called “Airwork” is also part of the program, where you master complex flight maneuvers. The crowning achievement of this phase is the solo cross-country flight. These intense flying experiences not only deepen your aviation knowledge but also further build your confidence, bringing you significantly closer to your goal of becoming a fully-fledged pilot.

  • 20 hours of flight training
  • Traffic pattern
  • Airwork
  • Solo cross-country flight

In the third practical phase, you will undergo a flight training segment of 50 hours. Here, the focus is on additional cross-country flights that elevate your navigation skills to the next level. Particularly challenging is the 300 NM flight, which not only tests your endurance but also sharpens your planning and navigation competencies. Additionally, night flying is part of the curriculum, opening up a completely new dimension of flying. This phase is crucial for enhancing the versatility of your flying abilities and preparing you for a wide range of flying conditions. With each hour in the cockpit, you’ll grow more confident, optimally preparing yourself.

  • 50 hours of flight training
  • Cross-country flights
  • 300 NM flight
  • Night flying

In the fourth practical phase of your ATPL training, a total of 117 hours of training are scheduled. Of these, you will complete 40 hours on a flight simulator to perfect your instrument flying skills. The remaining 77 hours take place directly in the cockpit of airplanes, where you will train intensively under instrument flight conditions. This phase enables you to master all aspects of flying under a variety of conditions. With a focus on instrument flying, you lay the foundation for safe and precise flight practices, optimally preparing you for the upcoming challenges as an airline pilot.

  • 117 hours of training
  • 40 hours in the simulator
  • 77 hours in the aircraft
  • Instrument flying
  • Night flying

Phase 5 is dedicated to advanced UPRT (Upset Prevention and Recovery Training). This training is aimed at preventing and terminating undesirable aircraft states during flight. The training is conducted on designated aircraft with suitably trained flight instructors. It is certain that this part of the training will be an unforgettable memory for you. This training segment takes place in Phase 4.

  • 5 hours of theoretical training
  • 3 hours of practical training
  • Duration approximately 1 week

The MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation) is the final step in the ATPL training. This part of the training focuses on training the cockpit crew with an emphasis on communication, collaboration, decision-making, etc. Commercial aircraft are always flown by at least two pilots, where smooth cooperation is extremely important. At RWL, this phase is trained on their own Full Flight Simulator for the Boeing B737 NG model.

  • 4 days of theoretical training
  • 20 hours of B737 simulator training (PF/PM)
  • Duration approximately 10 days
